About
To mark the bicentenary of the invention of photography, the D3P has chosen to focus this year on the theme of deteriorations, to highlight the fragility of the medium and its constituent materials, but also its remarkable longevity when properly preserved.
At our booth, we will be exhibiting photographs from the D3P’s educational collection, as well as from the bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris (BHVP) and the Fonds d’Art contemporain – Paris collection, to illustrate various types of common deteriorations, ranging from those specific to early processes such as daguerreotypes and ambrotypes, right through to contemporary photographs.
Our booth also pays tribute to all the professionals who have been working for some fifty years to safeguard our photographic heritage and who will be honoured at the international symposium ‘The age of photographs’, which we are co-organising from 9 to 11 November.

The municipal photographic heritage, collected since the invention of photography in 1839, now comprises more than 16 million photographs held in the museums, libraries and archives of the City of Paris. These holdings, which are of great historical, cultural and artistic value, are handled by the département pour la préservation du patrimoine photo graphique of the City of Paris, set up in 1983. The Department provides guidelines, restores these valuable collections, and collaborates with Paris Photo to promote this exceptional heritage.
