Ville de Paris

The municipal photographic heritage, collected since the invention of photography in 1839, now comprises more than 16 million photographs held in the museums, libraries and archives of the City of Paris. These holdings, which are of great historical, cultural and artistic value, are handled by the département pour la préservation du patrimoine photographique of the City of Paris, set up in 1983. The Department provides guidelines, restores these valuable collections, and collaborates with Paris Photo to promote this exceptional heritage.
