ALAIN QUEMIN

Alain Quemin is a professor of sociology of art at University of Paris-8 / Institute of European Studies and a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France, researcher at GEMASS (Paris Sorbonne / CNRS). He is a former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (Paris Saclay University) and of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, and a professor of social sciences. He holds a PHD in sociology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and leads research at the University of Paris-3 Sorbonne nouvelle. He works on the sociology of the art market as well as artistic institutions and activities, audiences, but also on artistic globalization, on notoriety and on the sociology of works of art.
Among his publications are Les stars de l'art contemporain. Notoriété et consécration artistiques dans les arts visuels, Paris, CNRS Editions, 2013, and Le monde des galeries. Art contemporain, structure du marché et internationalisation, CNRS Editions, 2021.

Alain Quemin has been a journalist and art critic for the past ten years (le Journal des Arts, la Gazette Drouot, artpress, Artension, Beaux-Arts magazine). He is a member of the International Association of Art Critics.
