Lisette Model was one of the most significant photographers of the twentieth century as well as an exceptional teacher whose students included Larry Fink and Rosalind Fox Solomon. Model inspired those she mentored to explore human psychology through a dynamic and avant-garde approach. MUUS’s presentation will focus on images of eye contact between Model, Fink, and Solomon with the people in their images, allowing viewers to discover the uniqueness of Model’s influence, the originality of each photographer’s style, and the collaborative exchange between these photographers and their subjects.

Artist Presentations

Lisette Model (1901-1983) was an Austrian-born American artist and one of the most influential street photographers, with frank, honest portrayals of everyday life. She later became a teacher and lecturer, fostering the talents of the photographers under her tutelage, including Larry Fink and Rosalind Fox Solomon.

Larry Fink (1941-2023) was a photographer and educator whose images documented the personal and social lives of America’s elite as well as the working class. Calling it “a tool of the intuition,” Fink’s penchant for flash resulted in his signature high-contrast photographs, capturing moments of spectacle both tender and dramatic.

Rosalind Fox Solomon (1930-2025) was an American artist celebrated for her exceptional photographic portraits. Spanning over 50 years, her boldly humanist work spans images of segregation in the American South, to earthquakes in Peru, and portraits made during the American AIDS crisis.
