SAUL LEITER: THE COLLECTOR OF MINUTE MOMENTS

Paintings, photographs, colour, black and white, street photography, fashion photography - approaching the work of Saul Leiter (Boston 1923 - New York 2013) is immediately complex. This artist-photographer, whose centenary we are celebrating this year, occupies a very special place in the history of photography, probably because of the cross-disciplinary dimension of his work. As a collector of minute moments, small fragments of the world around him, for almost 60 years he worked with four hands to weave a body of work of extraordinary density, yet always underground and at cross-purposes with its contemporaneity. Known as one of the great masters of colour photography, his work extends beyond this territory. This conversation/conference will map out his work, tracing its broad outlines, revealing its passages and detours, and situating it in the artistic context of New York at the time.
