Mirjam Reiter (*1998) grew up in rural Upper Austria; she now lives and works in Vienna. She is currently studying Applied Photography and Time-Based Media at the University of Applied Arts. In her photographic and video-based works, she addresses hidden violence and its consequences, while exploring memories, especially those that are kept secret or are difficult to articulate.

The project

I always felt something’s hiding inside of me.

I couldn’t locate it.

I couldn’t talk about it.

Before I could decipher its meaning, the images emerged.

Through a combination of documented and staged photographs fragmented, violent stories are told of a place that actually promises safety: our home. It’s difficult to translate trauma into our lived reality. In a patriarchal world, experiences of domestic violence shatter into unspeakable individual cases, but that seems to change right now. For behind individual stories is always a system that profits from silence. And the more we talk about it, the clearer it becomes.
