Takashi Homma is a widely recognized Japanese photographer. After working in London as a commercial photographer for several major international magazines, he began in the 1990s to concentrate more on territorial analysis—initially in Japan and later internationally—as well as on an investigation of the photographic language he employs. Following a major retrospective at the 21st Century Museum of Kanazawa and the Tokyo City Opera Art Gallery, he launched the project The Narcissistic City in 2014, which was published in April 2016 by the British publisher Mack Books. The project focuses on the analysis of representative and iconic buildings in various cities.
His exhibition at Viasaterna, La città narcisista. Milano e altre storie, was his first solo show in Italy and featured the debut of a new series dedicated to the city of Milan, produced in January 2017. In 2019, he published Symphony – mushrooms from the forest with Case Publishing, Tokyo. In 2021, he held an exhibition at the CCA in Montreal entirely dedicated to studying windows in Le Corbusier’s architecture, accompanied by a publication by Walther König titled Looking Through Le Corbusier Windows. In October 2023, he opened a major solo exhibition at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum titled Revolution 9.
Irene Crocco – Founder of Viasaterna gallery
“Viasaterna works with Takashi Homma since he is among the greatest contemporary Japanese photographers. We were astonished by insightful exploration of the human-nature relationship such as the series ‘Trails’, being one of his most acclaimed body of works. Since 2016 we have been collaborating with Homma for the first exhibition in Viasaterna ‘The Narcissistic City’, when we started to develop a meaningful friendship, reinforcing it during the residency ‘Casino Palermo’ (2018) organized by Viasaterna during Manifesta 12, and is growing further today.“
