    Paris Photo 2008

"With 107 exhibitors, including 86 galleries and 2 I publishers from 19 countries coming together at the prestigious venue that is the Carrousel du Louvre, Paris Photo has passed a new milestone. With 7 8% of participants from abroad and 3 7 newcomers, the fair grows even more international and proves its capacity to renew itself. The selection for 2008 has favoured a greater focus on personal exhibitions or thematic projects, presenting the best expressions in this artistic medium, from the earliest times to the present day. This year brings more emphasis on contemporary production with the presence of major artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Marina Abramovic, Bern and Hilla Becher, Chuck Close, Daido Moriyama, Nan Goldin, Martin Parr, Hiroshi Sugimoto.

But the most important aspect of this I 2th edition is undoubtedly the invitation extended to Japan to feature as country of honour: here is a unique photographic scene currently undergoing a complete rediscovery. With the work of I 30 artists on show, Paris Photo 2008 is presenting a vast panorama of historic and contemporary Japanese production, unprecedented in Europe and ranging from rare pieces from the Meiji era to the emerging trends of the new century. Under the direction of art critic and independent curator Mariko Takeuchi, Japan, Country of Honour is presented in four sections: The General Sector pays tribute to the great historic and contemporary masters, while the Statement section, composed of eight Japanese galleries, and the Project Room, dedicated to video production, highlight the creative effervescence of the generation of artists from the turn of the new century. For the first time, the Central Exhibition is devoted to publishers, highlighting the central role of the book on the Japanese photography scene.

Awarded by a prestigious jury, the prize has become an international reference in recognition of the work of a contemporary artist on a theme related to the world of BMW The work of some twenty artists short- listed for the prize is exhibited during Paris Photo."
