LE RÉVERBÈRE

LE RÉVERBÈRE

Stand:

Since 1981, Le Réverbère stands up with stubbornness for contemporary photography and its various expressions, with a keen, demanding and uncompromising outlook inherited from its co-founders, Catherine Dérioz and Jacques Damez. The adventure started modestly at a time when only a few institutions were beginning to make room on their walls for photography — beginning to recognise it as an art in its own right. They imposed a rigorous and pertinent exhibition policy, defending photography and its embracing of the visual arts, without yielding to the trend for photography by visual artists. For the last thirty seven years, they have hunted out and supported many artists, including William Klein, Denis Roche, Bernard Plossu and Pierre de Fenoÿl. But, it is not the name that counts here, it is a quality of perception, relevance, skill and precision. All of them noticeably belong to the same family ; they play with the picture they produce using the complexities and ambiguities of reality. In 2018, three institutions entrusted them with curating the shows “Los Modernos” at the Musée des Beaux-arts of Lyon (photography section), “Pierre de Fenoÿl / L’éclat des ombres”, at the Musée Paul-Dupuy of Toulouse and “Géraldine Lay / North End”, during the Rencontres d’Arles. For the photography biennial “L’étreinte du tourbillon”, the Musée des Beaux-arts of Mulhouse presented a dialogue about intimacy through the artworks of Denis Roche and Julien Magre, echoing the stand planned for this edition of Paris Photo. Due to the fidelity of the artists and the networking undertaken, Le Réverbère rolls out as a place of artistic and human exchange, far from all orthodoxy,, sparking a dialogue between the works, under the gaze of both actors and observers. 225 indoors exhibitions have been created in 37 years, and over a thousand organised outdoors.
