The Platform is an experimental forum proposing, over the course of 4 days, a series of conversations according to several axes:

HOW TO COLLECT PHOTOGRAPHY TODAY?

Today photography has definitively gained an important position within most of large art museums. Recognized as art, the photographic medium enriched continuously their collections. Clément Chéroux, chief curator, Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowska, curator, both at the Photography Department of the Centre Pompidou, together with their hosts will discuss in which directions should or could the photography collections develop.

"Provoke" : between Art and Politic in Japan in the 1960’s.

The culte magazine Provoke overturned the history of photography. Coinciding with the exhibition, Provoke, Between Protestation and Performance, currently on view at Le Bal, Diane Dufour, co-curator, and her guests will propose a cross-analysis of Provoke, its historical context and its ties to the emergence of performance art in Japan in the 1960s.

PHOTOGRAPHY BEYOND REPRESENTATION

Jens Hoffmann, Deputy Director of the Jewish Museum, New York and Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, leads a discussion on how the use of digital manipulation, the selection of specific cameras or lenses, the choice of photo paper or specific development techniques are purposely employed in order to produce photographic works that seek to go beyond the production of an image, thus pointing towards the materiality, color, form, surface, and physicality of the photographs themselves.

PHOTOGRAPHY & CINEMA IN PRACTICE

Matthieu Orléan, artistic consultant at La Cinémathèque française, will lead a discussion with filmmakers, artists, critics, and curators on vernacular photography in cinematic production and the role of still photography in the history of art. He will also hold a discussion with two artists on their conjoined and paradoxical practices of photography and cinema.

THE ARTIST AS…

Pascal Beausse, head of the photographic collections of Centre National des Arts Plastiques, will lead a discussion with artists on the different roles that artists undertake, from the act of creation to the diffusion and exhibition of their images: the artist as curator, collector, investigator, activist, poet…
