To open this chunky, hardcover book, the reader must carefully remove an outer wrapping that serves as a key to the contents within: it’s printed with a clear view of a single Tokyo cityscape, painstakingly assembled from thousands of collaged contact-sheet frames. (Photographer Sohei Nishino calls the resulting image a “diorama map.”) Over the almost five hundred pages within, a single section of this diorama map is presented full-bleed on every spread: the first page of the book starts with a segment from the map’s top left corner, proceeding section-by-section until the entire map has been revealed. “It’s a successful translation of a large-scale, complex image to book format,” says David Campany. “Few books deal as effectively with the issues of scale and the rendering of the experience of standing in front of a single, massive, detailed image.”
