Summer Days Staten Island brings together a collection of medium-format photographs which lay unpublished as a body of work for more than thirty years, for what is long-time photography professor Christine Osinski’s first photobook. The fifty-one images depict the so-called “forgotten” New York borough of Staten Island and its working-class residents, between 1983 and 1984. “It’s wonderful to discover to a collection of such strong, compelling portraits and scenes, more than thirty years after their creation,” says Wiesner. “Books like this allow us to recover work by under-recognized artists.” Beautifully printed on creamy paper, with classic production and design, this landscape-format book features one plate per spread, or the occasional pair of images. Osinski imbues the sitters with a sense of closeness, portraying the people who made these suburban and urban neighborhoods their home.
