Like a Nordic noir, Sugar Paper Theories draws the viewer into a world of confused confessions, conspiracy theories, and plenty of red herrings. The subject is a high-profile, controversial crime case known as the Reykjavik Confessions; the diligent reader will piece together the story of two infamous Icelandic murders and the doubts that remain over how the case was handled—especially concerning six confessions which were extracted from individuals who could not remember what had happened. Welsh photographer Jack Latham has gathered archival police files and other tantalizing tidbits of information from the case, alongside his own photographs of the scenes of the crimes and portraits of those who are still debating its resolution. “The design and the use of various papers, printing techniques, and blown-in texts are handled expertly and purposefully in the visual telling of this complicated case,” says Lesley Martin.
