This collection of images and texts offers photographic evidence of the life of photographer Andre Bradley. It represents an effort to organize and examine assumptions made and roles taken on, then discarded—as well as Bradley’s hard-won knowledge of what it means to grow up black in America. Becky Senf explains that this elegant, personal book is “evocative without being overdetermined. There’s an opportunity to see it as a linear narrative from one person’s perspective, while also inviting a more studied, interpretive engagement by the reader.” Dark Archives is presented as a dossier: a folder containing several differently sized booklets, each representing a span of time. Carefully crafted texts, ranging from a single line to a full page and placed in direct relation to the collection of images, create a line of inquiry that is both vulnerable and clear-eyed running throughout this evocative book.
