This sumptuously produced, ten-volume anthology chronicles William Eggleston’s travels in the 1980s—a journey now familiar to photography enthusiasts—across the South, up through Miami, Boston, and across to the Berlin Wall. A hyper-expanded iteration of The Democratic Forest, which was first published in 1989, this set contains over 1,000 images. The title refers to the democracy of this master colorist’s vision, which pays equal attention to the banal and the elevated. Each of the hardback volumes has an image printed on its cloth cover and a location or thematic principle (“Berlin,” “The Pastoral”), yet urban scenes from Berlin meld seamlessly with American landscapes. Everything is printed with maximum saturation on classically creamy paper. “Each book is just stunning—you have one strong image after another,” says Wiesner. “For a historical photographer of Eggleston’s style, there can be no better retrospective. It’s a masterpiece and a tremendous visual delight.”
