A Handful of Dust was published to accompany an exhibition inspired by Man Ray’s iconic 1920 photograph of dust gathered on the surface of Marcel Duchamp’s The Large Glass. The exhibition, organized by Le Bal, includes works by well-known artists alongside anonymous press photos, postcards, magazine spreads, and movies; fittingly, its catalogue is a unique, multilayered, and intuitively assembled publication. Man Ray’s image both appears on the cover and is repeated in the center of the book. As a clever design element, the repeat of the image in the interior serves as a dock of sorts for a removable booklet nestled into the middle of the book. This book within a book carries the extended essay written by curator David Campany.* Christoph Wiesner says, “This catalogue is a huge pleasure—a beautiful complement to the exhibition. It allows you to rediscover the show in a new way, and really spend time with the images and ideas.”
*David Campany recused himself from the shortlist jury’s discussions of this title.
