Pierre Bismuth

Pierre Bismuth (b.1963) is a french contemporary artist living and working in Brussels. His work has been exhibited in major institutions like the Mnam - Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), The New Museum (NYC), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), or Witte de With (Rotterdam). The Kunsthalle Wien organized a major survey show of his work earlier this year. In 2005 he was awarded an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. He currently works on his first feature which will release in early 2016.

His work explores the multiple manifestations and product of knowledge and culture. By means of simple accumulation - an excess of material, of translations, of possibilities – the artist challenges any logic of efficiency and usefulness. Bismuth’s work manages to find the means for an effective transformation and ultimately to formulate a promise: no matter how structured and limited human activity and creativity are, freedom can be rescued from any closed system.

Pierre Bismuth is represented by Jan Mot (Brussels), Team Gallery (NYC), Christine Konig (Vienna) and Bugada Cargnel (Paris).
