Tribute to Dennis Hopper - 2014
exhibition and screening
Paris Photo Los Angeles and the The Hopper Art Trust announce a special tribute to the renowned actor/director and artist Dennis Hopper.
A presentation of Hopper's photographic work will be on display for the duration of the fair and a rare screening of his 1971 film, “The Last Movie," winner of the Critics Prize at the Venice Film Festival, will be presented in one private VIP as well as one public screening at the Fair. The occasion marks the first public screening in Los Angeles and the first time the film that was re-mastered by Hopper in 2007 will be viewed by the public since his death in 2010.
Tickets for the public screening (April 26 at 5pm at Paramount Theater) are now available onsite only.
“It’s a movie about movies. It’s like an Abstract Expressionist painting—a breaking out. The painter says, “This is paint I am using. See? And this is canvas. I’m showing you the canvas. Now I’m going to turn it upside down. This is where my hand touched the paint. See, there’s my hand. Now I’m going to walk across it. There! This is not going to be an apple or a sunset or anything. It’s a painting!” This movie shows you the structure. I was leaving the pencil marks and the brushstrokes, and saying, “Hey! It’s a movie!” It shows you all the things you can do with movies—make people laugh, cry—and then asks, “But what are we using all of this alchemy for?” Are we going to keep on making Westerns for big corporations or are we going to make personal statements?”
Dennis Hopper quoted in Rolling Stone after the limited release of “The Last Movie” in 1971.
