"Once again the Carrousel du Louvre will be filled with 85 of the most respected dealers of photography and art, booksellers and magazines from all over the world. This year we have chosen to explore as a central theme Fashion & Photography.

The works on exhibit testify to the rich history, enormous energy and creative potential generated by the fashion world. Designers and art directors have works along with photographers to create some of the most exciting images of this century. From the narcisitic portraits of the Contesse de Castiglione up to the work of Terry Richardson there is a history or desire to suit every dream.

The texts in this catalog and the selections from the private collections of Pierre Bergé, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Claude Deloffre and Lothar Schirmer shown in the Salon, as well as the exhibition by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie serve to take you on a stroll through the history of photography and evoke the relationship that collectors who work in the field of fashion and publishing have in every day life with photography in general and their collection in particular."

Rik Gadella, director of Paris Photo, Stéphane Baumet, general curator of Paris Photo. Extract from the 1999 catalogue edito
